Data Visualization & Storytelling
A finding nobody understands has no impact. Learn how to choose the right chart, design clearly, and structure a narrative that moves stakeholders from data to decision.
Choosing the Right Chart
Pick the chart based on the question you are answering:
- Comparison across categories — Bar chart (sorted).
- Trend over time — Line chart.
- Distribution — Histogram, box or violin plot.
- Relationship — Scatter plot, optionally with a trend line.
- Part of a whole — Stacked bar; use pie charts sparingly and only for a few slices.
Design Principles
Clarity beats decoration:
- Give every chart a title that states the takeaway, not just the topic.
- Label axes with units and remove unnecessary gridlines and borders.
- Use color purposefully — highlight one series, mute the rest.
- Start bar-chart axes at zero; truncated axes exaggerate differences.
- Ensure color choices work for color-blind viewers.
A Clear, Annotated Chart
This example highlights the key insight directly on the plot:
python
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
months = ["Jan", "Feb", "Mar", "Apr", "May", "Jun"]
signups = [820, 860, 905, 1480, 1520, 1575]
fig, ax = plt.subplots(figsize=(8, 4))
ax.plot(months, signups, color="#34D399", linewidth=2.5, marker="o")
ax.annotate("Referral campaign launched",
xy=("Apr", 1480), xytext=("Jan", 1400),
arrowprops=dict(arrowstyle="->", color="gray"))
ax.set_title("Referral campaign lifted monthly signups by ~60%", loc="left")
ax.set_ylabel("New signups")
ax.spines[["top", "right"]].set_visible(False)
plt.tight_layout()
plt.show()Structuring the Story
A reliable narrative arc for stakeholder presentations:
Context — why the question matters.
Insight — the single most important finding, shown visually.
Evidence — the supporting analysis and caveats.
Recommendation — the specific action you propose and its expected impact.
Key Takeaways
- Choose chart types to match the question being asked.
- Titles should state the insight, not just describe the data.
- Reduce clutter and use color to direct attention.
- End with a clear recommendation, not just a chart.
